Encouraging your participation in the OMA Annual General Meeting – Tuesday, May 7

Dear SGFP Members,

I want to personally encourage you to take part in this year’s Ontario Medical Association Annual General Meeting (AGM), being held in person in Ottawa and available virtually for those joining from across the province. This important event brings our profession together to connect, celebrate leadership, and make decisions that shape how the OMA moves forward.

You can view the agenda here and register here

Your participation matters. This AGM will include votes to ratify the election results, discussion and debate on member proposals that could reshape some aspects of our organizational structure, and consideration of several key governance and financial decisions affecting how the OMA plans for the future. Every family physician voice contributes to ensuring that our professional association continues to reflect the needs and priorities of its members across Ontario.

It’s also a moment to celebrate leadership within our family medicine community. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Rebecca Hicks (who previously served on the SGFP executive), who will be installed as the OMA President, and take a moment to thank Dr. Zainab Abdurrahman, whose term as President concludes with deep appreciation for her dedication and service.

And beyond the formal business, the AGM is a chance to reconnect, reflect, and enjoy time with colleagues. The event will feature live entertainment by comedian Rick Mercer, offering some laughter and camaraderie as we gather.

I wish to encourage you, whether you attend virtually or make the trip to Ottawa, to be part of this important event. Your engagement strengthens our collective voice and ensures that family physicians continue to play a vital role in shaping the direction of the OMA.

How to prepare for the AGM

To make the most of the meeting, review the materials in advance and come prepared with any questions. If you’re planning to speak to an item, consider organizing your thoughts ahead of time. Speaking time is limited (typically about one minute), so being concise helps ensure more voices are heard and that you don’t get cut off.

The OMA has prepared an overview of the member proposals, that includes a two-minute summary and a more comprehensive overview. You can find it here.

The AGM is hybrid, with speakers alternating between virtual and in-person participants. Where there is discussion, efforts will be made to reflect a range of perspectives.

All materials are available online and will also be in the meeting platform. Registered members will receive login details on May 1. As voting takes place through this platform, please register and ensure you can access ahead of time.

I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Warm Regards,

Dr. Dave Barber, Chair, SGFP

SGFP On-Call: May Sessions Still Available

If you haven’t yet joined us for an SGFP On-Call session, there are still a few spaces available in May. These 1:1 conversations with SGFP leaders continue to be one of the most meaningful ways for us to hear directly from you, what’s working, what isn’t, and where the system is putting pressure on your practice. Members have told us how valuable it is to have protected time to speak candidly about their realities, and your insights are directly shaping our advocacy and priorities.

If you have something on your mind, or simply want to connect, we encourage you to book a time. We’re here, we’re listening, and your voice genuinely matters.
